Finland | 2017

Stina Silegren

finland

I've been to Finland...4 times? 6 times? Not sure, I've lost count. This has been my favourite trip to Finland so far! Lots of time spent with family, and lots of adventures :) I wanted to create a brief timeline of my trip, which has in turn made a looooong post. Oh well! :P You can skip all the chit chat and just browse the pics.

The Wedding

After a full day of travelling, we arrived in Oulu, Finland for my brother's wedding. It was a busy day start to finish, with few pics captured on my camera, but a lovely lovely wedding.

Arctic Circle / Santa's Village

After the wedding day, we started on different adventures every day. First stop - Arctic Circle!! "You are no longer a tourist, you are an explorer" LOL. We got to meet santa claus in his village, and see the reindeer!!

Husky Dog Sled Ride

While in Rovaniemi, we went for a dog sled ride. This was undoubtedly my favourite part of the trip, I LOVE huskies :) :) :) The dogs were awesome, they love running, & the views were incredible!!

Finland in full...FULL of birch trees!!

LumiLinna / Snow Castle

The next day we drove to Kemi, and visited LumiLinna (Snow Castle) and it blew our minds!! There were so many ice sculptures, and all the snow detailing was hand carved. This year, the theme was Suomi 100...because Finland turns 100 years old this year!!

They had a restaurant, but we wouldn't have been able to sit through an entire meal, little chilly in there. So we opted for some hot chocolate, and cold pulla (classic Finn baked good) which we microwaved :P

Outside, we saw the sun at it's highest that day - so beautiful!!

Oulu, Finland

We also got a chance to explore Oulu finally! Visited the kaupatorri (city market) where they had lots and lots of baked goodies, chocolate, and meat LOL. Core components of a Finn diet. And obviously took my pic with the Oulun polliisi (police) :)

Tallin, Estonia

We decided to make our way to Estonia as well! It was our only day with sub-par weather, but I'll take it! There was sunshine every other day, a rarity during the winter months. Basically just lots of pictures of old buildings and cobblestone roads :P

Helsinki, Finland

As our trip was coming to an end, we finally got a chance to explore Finland's capital city, Helsinki! It was so warm that day, we ate lunch outside! Lots of walking around and shopping that day :)

Year 23

Stina Silegren

year23

I love being 23, my favourite year so far. I had to provide for myself and I learned how to be an adult, but still had the joy of saying 'early twenties.' I complied 23 moments from this past year - good or bad - that stood out and made the year one to remember.

  1. I bought a freakin' condo! What!!
  2. Enjoyed our "old" cottage for the last summer
  3. Had to put down our family dog, who I've known since I was 10.
  4. Bought my very own vacuum #adulting
  5. Trapped a rabid raccoon in my backyard
  6. Learned how to do a rope climb
  7. Helped re-do a roof with my family
  8. Saw Niagara falls from below, a new perspective
  9. Finished my first Spartan Race with my family
  10. Met up with some lovely people on a trip to Thunder Bay
  11. Ran an obstacle course with my co-workers
  12. Got some new glasses to pretend I'm studious
  13. Re-discovered a love of photography and bought my first camera
  14. Started a job I've worked 5 years to get, and loved it
  15. Learned negativity is definitely the easy way out, and being positive takes effort
  16. Learned to love my body for what it can do, and the health it's given me
  17. Got a killer sunburn on my back with lovely tan lines :|
  18. Spend time with my whole family for the first time in years this summer
  19. Struggled with the vegan thing, but learned balance is important
  20. Actually paid real money to have my eyelashes tinted & curled...it's a thing lol
  21. Had the most quiet christmas this year
  22. Learned I'm literally stronger than I think #weightlifting
  23. AND had a lovely birthday dinner at my new favourite restaurant

Hope you enjoy & cheers to 2017,

i'm not invincible

Stina Silegren

I've been a critical care nurse for one year, and I've learned this: I'm not invincible.

Lately I have found myself driving more carefully, and getting fearful I might end up in a car accident. I wasn't sure why... since I've never been scared of this before and I never get anxious or have panic attacks. I've never even been in a car accident. So why all of a sudden was I having these feelings?

Then one day it clicked. I'm dealing with death on almost a daily basis, something I've never had to do before. I think when you're young ... you feel invincible. And not like 'I can jump off a bridge' invincible, the 'I'm healthy and I'll be alive in 10 months' invincible. Although occasionally when I'm driving I do have these moments of awareness - I wouldn't say I suffer from these thoughts regularly (thankfully). It has just opened my eyes a little bit, to change the way I think about my life and my future.

I don't know what the future holds, so I want to live today with a little more love and a little more positivity. My challenge, for each day in December is these 3 seemingly simple things:

  1. Find something beautiful in one thing that could be easily overlooked. (Because it's so cliche it works)
  2. Catch someone doing something kind or nice. (To hopefully restore my faith in humanity)
  3. Think of one thing I did (or will do) to make the world a little bit better. (Since I should probably do something other than just think of stuff right?)

Maybe...I'll post my findings at the end of this month?

Hope you enjoy,

Throwback

Stina Silegren

My first memory is when I was 2 years old. We were moving houses and I remember looking out the back window of our car and seeing some of my most treasured possessions in the trailer bumping around on the drive over. And by treasured possessions I mean a few toys :D I just remember the worry I felt they might fall out or get lost. But as far as I know, everything made it safe and sound :)

This is from moving day! My OOTD hehe :)

My first day of kindergarden!

My first day of kindergarden!

When I think about it, most of my childhood memories are from being outside! Playing games, jumping on the trampoline, riding bikes, riding dirtbikes, swimming - anything!

My sweet sweet style :) leggings and a cable knit sweater haha. And my first dog, Bella!

Annnnd, I thought I'd end it off with a photo proving just how photogenic I really am :P What's your first memory?

Hope you enjoy!

Gloomy days

Stina Silegren

rainy day

Don't you love it when you make a big effort, drive for a few hours to go to the cottage...and the weather is less than idillic?! It has been >15*C and sunny every day this week, and then when the weekend rolls around it's cold & rainy. What's that about?! And then there was a big snowstorm at the end :(

Basically, I stayed inside cuddling with the puppy and watching movies...ran outside to take some pics, and back in I went. I will say, when it's cold and rainy outside - it is very satisfying to just lounge around and do nothing, 'amiright?

Plus going to the cottage is a nice change of scenery, and let me test out my new camera. Annnd I got to spend time with the famjam. So although the weather was gloomy, the actual weekend was pretty good. Trying to be glass half full here :)

Every day may not be good, but there is something good in every day.
